"I TRIED MY BEST TO KEEP MY DISTANCE FROM YOUR DRESS..."

Photobucket
I'll be the first to admit that I have a truly indulgent and terrible habit of buying dresses that will only be worn once. I'm not celebrity, but I try to abide by the red carpet mantra that no dress should be worn twice. Over the years I've accumulated dozens of "one-time-wear" dresses that are hanging in my closet. Some I can still fit into while others are just getting lonelier by the year. Regardless of their impracticalness, I continue to fall in love with dresses that I know I'll never have the opportunity to wear or I may never have to guts to wear. The dress above stole my heart this past Sunday and even though I generally omit any dress with a single shoulder, this one was up there on my list of Dream Dresses. Paying homage to the always adorable Zooey Deschanel, I call this color "Zooey Blue" and if you personally know me then you are familiar with my fixation with her (just like every other 20-something year old). The actual color of this dress is much brighter as you can see and is very similar to something she would wear.

I probably wasn't doing myself any favors by going shopping again after work and falling in love with two more. Sure, some of them may be outrageous, some might call them ugly or tacky, but in an idealistic world I would have a collection of all the stunning dresses that I've lusted over over the years. Oh, and simply because I couldn't help myself, here are two more I drooled over at the store today. Yes, both are impractical and yes, both are way overpriced, but that never stops me from buying them.

“STYROFOAM PLATES, CAFETERIA TABLES. CHARITY REEKS OF CHEAP WINE AND PITY.”

Photobucket

I stand by my claim that it's perfectly acceptable to eat spoonfuls (gobs)of Nutella. I'm spending the weekend at my parent's house because Matt is out of town and I've got a few refurbishing projects that I've been wanting to finish since Christmas. I'm also using my sisters junky, antique PC laptop to type this entry and am afraid that at any minute this will one way or another erase itself, as seems to be the case with anything I attempt to write on a PC. Oh, super swift Mac laptop, how I wish I hadn't accidentally left you at home. One of the reasons I'm most excited about being at home is my weekly Saturday trip to my favorite hole-in-the-wall thrift shop. I am a woman on a mission this weekend as a few weeks ago I found an abandoned plate tier, sans plates. My co-worker and I were making some tea upstairs in the kitchen and we looked over to find a beautiful, discarded plate tier standing next to the trash can. It seemed to be a remnant from a work event and I immediately claimed it as my own. As you can imagine, it was quite fun riding with it back home on the BART train but I didn't mind the inconvenience...I had a vision.

After taking some measurements, I am on the hunt for the perfect three vintage plates to complete this tier. The more colorful and ornate the better as I will be using this in the corner of my kitchen to display pastries, pies and even fruit in the summertime. I frequently find breathtaking antique plates in thrift stores however can't seem to nail down a concept for how to incorporate them into my decor. My mother has some beautiful pieces showcased in her breakfast room hutch and I'm tempted to do the same as soon as my hutch is finished. However, sometimes I find these plates almost too beautiful to hide behind glass, and wish there was a more functional purpose for them. I hope that the thrift store gods are on my side today and that I'll find the perfect new additions to my ever expanding platter collection.

"WINDOWS AND DOORWAYS, I DON'T KNOW WHICH WAY TO LEAVE THIS ROOM."

Photobucket
Why, oh why, is is so unbelievably DIFFICULT to start and maintain a quasi-entertaining blog. Not just entertaining to the masses, but as an effort to entertain myself enough to actually want to update something that I feel is read, understood and appreciated. What do you blog about? What sort of pictures grab the eye and why on earth would anyone read just anything written by a stranger.

The answer is because we are fascinated with other people's lives. Whether they are just as mundane as ours or perhaps only slightly more interesting, the secret lives of others which blogs expose provide us a window into something that would otherwise never been exposed, much less documented. There is an innate curiosity that causes us all to be interested with what others are doing (or not doing) with their lives. Not so much to measure your own success against, but to inspire you and make you perceive your own life through a kaleidoscopic lens.

At twenty-four, I'm on the verge of discovering a new self, and after years in the music journalism industry, I'd like to open a new window and take a crack at interior decorating. You can blame my mom, you can blame my love for old furniture and wallpaper, you can blame whoever, but the fact of the matter is that I'm doing something drastic with my life: making a career change.

Some have said that going from one dying industry to another, not-so-profitable one is hazardous, but if my track record is any sort of evidence, I always go after what I want without looking back or paying much attention to what "the next emergent career field" is. The cliche "life is what you make it" couldn't be more applicable to my current situation and instead of sitting around and waiting for the magazine industry to save itself, I'm veering off the beaten path and going for it. Enjoy my updates inspired by random vintage furniture, salvaged windows, damask and baroque upholstery, and because I can't seem to escape it, good music.
